Writing for the judges

So I attend this half day conferance held by upper court judges and the first thing that strikes me is that a lot of them are writers first and foremost. Most of the advice to lawyers is straight out of “Strunk and White”, ie keep it simple, avoid latin, put your chief points up front for everyone to see them, and be a little interesting. We are asking courts to read a hell of a lot and it helps if we do the writing well. As author Irwin Shaw opined in his novel “Rich man, poor man” law is the language of the modern world and lawyers have the advantage of speaking the language.
